Leuven aims to be climate-neutral by 2030: not just as a vision, but as a shared mission
Leuven 2030 is a citywide movement working to make Leuven climate-neutral and fossil-free.
Founded in 2013, it brings together citizens, businesses, knowledge institutions and public authorities to accelerate sustainable transition.
Leuven is part of the European mission of the European Union to become one of 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030. Through the Leuven Climate City Contract, partners commit to breakthrough projects and measurable CO₂ reductions. The initiative combines environmental ambition with social impact, aiming for cleaner air, greener neighbourhoods, resilient jobs and a future-proof city for everyone.
European Capitals of Inclusion and Diversity 2026
In 2026, Leuven was awarded second place in the European Capitals of Inclusion and Diversity awards by the European Commission. This recognition reflects the city's commitment to accessibility, equal opportunities, diversity, inclusion, and social participation, values that contribute to a welcoming environment for both residents and visitors.
EU Recognition for Leuven’s Climate Leadership in 2024
In 2024, Leuven became the first Belgian city to receive the EU Mission Label from the European Commission.
This prestigious label confirms that Leuven’s Climate City Contract meets the highest standards for climate neutrality planning. It strengthens the city’s role in the EU’s “100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030” initiative and opens doors to funding for breakthrough sustainability projects.
Leuven, European iCapital 2020
In 2020, Leuven was named European Capital of Innovation by the European Commission, recognizing its citizen-driven approach to innovation and collaboration. The city won €1 million for its pioneering model, beating finalists like Vienna, Valencia, and Milan, and joining a select group of winners including Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Paris.
