In 2025, the university celebrated its 600 year anniversary, marking six centuries of academic excellence and innovation.

A new hub for science and discovery
The Vesalius Museum will open in the heart of Leuven in December 2026 as a new initiative by KU Leuven and UZ Leuven.
Named after Andreas Vesalius, the 16th‑century anatomist and KU Leuven alumnus who laid the foundations of modern anatomy, the museum will be a place where healthcare and science meet. Visitors will explore the human body through unique heritage objects, immersive installations and contemporary art, offering new perspectives on medical science.

Innovation through collaboration
'Research has its own finality, but it also feeds many other relevant areas.' Says Prof. Koenraad Debackere, former General Manager at KU Leuven and Managing Director of LRD: 'Tech transfer, for instance, which KU Leuven adopted very early on, has proven very fruitful, enabling research results to find their way into economic life and society. Our university hospitals have their operational independence, but are at the same time closely intertwined with the university combining top-level healthcare with fundamental and clinical research.'
