UZ Leuven, one of Europe's most advanced university hospitals, combines patient care, education and research, while conducting more than 1,100 clinical studies each year.
Together, KU Leuven, UZ Leuven, imec and VIB drive breakthroughs in biomedical research, digital health and medical technology. Their close collaboration with industry fuels innovation, supports successful spin-offs and brings healthcare solutions to patients worldwide.
Leuven is also recognised as Europe's first Heart City (Europese HARTstad), highlighting its leadership in cardiovascular health through collaboration between healthcare, policy, science and citizens.
At the cutting edge of high-tech
The Leuven region remains a hotspot for technology development and high-tech entrepreneurship. This favourable climate for knowledge-driven innovation has resulted in a dense network of high-tech companies and spin-offs.
World‑class organisations such as imec, Materialise and Siemens (which integrated Leuven‑based LMS International) anchor the region’s strengths in nanotechnology, mechatronics, intelligent systems, ICT and cleantech. Innovative players such as Vertical Compute further contribute to Leuven’s advanced technology landscape.
Together, they form a strong network of more than 180 spin-off companies and over 300 high-tech companies.

In 2030, Leuven and the wider region will hold the title of European Capital of Culture.
Through LOV2030, the city connects culture, care, education, science and technology through artistic, social and innovation-driven initiatives. The programme encourages experimentation and collaboration across disciplines, creating new opportunities for innovation and societal impact.
This cross-pollination is visible throughout the city. Museum M and STUK connect arts, culture and research, while companies such as Hotel Bonka, De Chinezen and Boondoggle Havas contribute to a thriving creative industries scene in the canal zone.
Leuven MindGate: strengthening Leuven and its region
Leuven MindGate is the collaboration platform that strengthens and promotes the Leuven Innovation Region. It connects companies, knowledge institutions and public partners across three of the region’s strongest innovation domains: Health & Life Sciences, Deep Tech & Advanced Engineering, and Digital & AI.
Its role goes beyond connecting the ecosystem. Leuven MindGate brings organizations and professionals together, attracts companies, investors and talent to the region, and develops collaborative projects that support the region’s economic and technological growth.
By bringing these strengths together, Leuven MindGate helps position the wider Leuven Innovation Region as an internationally connected environment for research, entrepreneurship and technological innovation.
